This is how it works. Public official hive DayZ servers share the same character file. Private non hive DayZ severs will be a fresh character each time as since its not hive only the server you played on will have your character file. The same will be true with Livonia. Public Hive = Shared Character. Private = new character for each server.

It seems your best bet is to play on official servers. They almost never wipe, whereas most if not all community servers are wiped at least with every major update. I mean, a wipe every 3 months is quite infrequent for a community server, you'd probably be hard-pressed to find one that stays up for longer periods.
